Holiday Shipping Deadlines 2026 for Online Stores

Key Takeaways

  • Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday. USPS recommends shipping by Dec 17 for Ground Advantage, Dec 18 for Priority Mail and Dec 19 for Priority Mail Express.
  • FedEx's last days to ship for arrival by Dec 24 run from Dec 15 (Ground Economy) to Dec 17–23 for Ground and Home Delivery depending on transit time, and Dec 23 for overnight.
  • UPS has published its holiday operating schedule (no Ground pickup on Dec 24, no pickup or delivery on Dec 25) but, as of Oct 8, not its 2026 last days to ship by service.
  • Your store's cutoff has to come 1–3 business days before the carrier's, depending on how long you take to pick, pack and hand off orders.
  • Wine can't go by USPS at all. Federal law makes alcoholic beverages nonmailable, so winery cutoffs follow FedEx and UPS, and every box still needs an adult (21+) signature.
  • Even in a good year, some parcels arrive late. In December 2025, carriers delivered 94.1% (USPS) to 97.2% (UPS) of parcels on time, according to ShipMatrix. On 10,000 orders, that's about 280–590 packages that missed their date.

The 2026 holiday calendar at a glance

This season has a few dates that change the usual planning:
  • Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov 26. UPS has no pickup or delivery that day, and many warehouses close. Cyber Monday is Nov 30.
  • Hanukkah runs Dec 4–12. USPS notes it falls earlier this year, so Hanukkah gifts need to ship about three weeks before Christmas gifts.
  • Christmas is Friday, Dec 25. That puts the last full shipping week at Dec 21–24, and the weekend of Dec 19–20 sits right before it.
  • New Year's Eve, Dec 31: UPS has no Ground pickup or Ground delivery that day.
Volume will be high again. Adobe forecasts $275.1 billion in U.S. online holiday spending from Nov 1 to Dec 31, up 6.7% from 2025, with $47.5 billion in Cyber Week alone. ShipMatrix counted about 2.3 billion parcels delivered in December 2025, up 5% from the year before.

USPS holiday shipping deadlines 2026

USPS published its recommended send-by dates for delivery before Dec 25 on Sep 22:
USPS serviceContiguous U.S.Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, territories
Ground AdvantageThu, Dec 17Wed, Dec 16
First-Class MailThu, Dec 17Thu, Dec 17
Priority MailFri, Dec 18Fri, Dec 18
Priority Mail ExpressSat, Dec 19Sat, Dec 19
For military addresses (APO/FPO/DPO), Ground Advantage must ship by Nov 4, and First-Class Mail and Priority Mail by Dec 9. For international destinations, First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International must ship by Dec 9, and Priority Mail Express International by Dec 16.

Be careful with Alaska and Hawaii this year. Since Oct 1, USPS has listed Ground Advantage to and from Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. territories as 10+ days, up from 2–5, and warns that some deliveries may take "significantly longer," Supply Chain Dive reported. USPS still lists Dec 16 for Ground Advantage to those areas, but its own holiday page warns that offshore Ground Advantage packages may take longer. For gifts going there, Priority Mail (now 2–4 days to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico) is the safer choice.

FedEx holiday shipping deadlines 2026

FedEx's 2026 dates are for delivery by Thursday, Dec 24 within the contiguous U.S.:
FedEx serviceLast day to ship
Ground EconomyTue, Dec 15
Ground / Home Delivery, 5-day transitThu, Dec 17
Ground / Home Delivery, 4-day transitFri, Dec 18
Ground / Home Delivery, 3-day transitMon, Dec 21

FedEx Ground transit within the contiguous U.S. is typically 1 to 5 business days, so the date that applies depends on the distance from your warehouse to the customer. Check the transit days for each of your main lanes. FedEx lists 3 to 7 business days to and from Alaska and Hawaii. FedEx states that these dates are not a delivery guarantee.

UPS holiday shipping 2026: what's published so far

As of Oct 8, UPS has published its 2026 holiday operating days but not its last days to ship by service. Here is what is confirmed:

USPS gives one date per service no matter the distance. FedEx Ground's date depends on the lane, so a regional shipper can take Ground orders for a few days longer than one shipping cross-country.

Carrier cutoff vs store cutoff: how to set your last order date

The carrier's date is when the package must be in the carrier's hands. Your store's last order date has to come earlier, because orders still need to be picked, packed, labeled and picked up. A simple way to set it:

Store cutoff = carrier last day to ship − your fulfillment time − one buffer day
Your fulfillment timeFedEx Ground, 4-day lane (ship by Fri, Dec 18)USPS Priority Mail (ship by Fri, Dec 18)FedEx 2Day (ship by Tue, Dec 22)
Same dayOrder by Thu, Dec 17Order by Thu, Dec 17Order by Mon, Dec 21
1 business dayOrder by Wed, Dec 16Order by Wed, Dec 16Order by Fri, Dec 18
2 business daysOrder by Tue, Dec 15Order by Tue, Dec 15Order by Thu, Dec 17
Business days only. The weekend of Dec 19–20 adds no fulfillment days unless your warehouse works it.

A few rules make the dates stick:
  1. Use your slowest real lane, not your average. If 20% of your orders go cross-country, the 5-day Ground date is the one that matters.
  2. Plan for the busiest week. Fulfillment that takes one day in October may take two in mid-December. Use your December numbers from last year.
  3. Show the date everywhere. Put the cutoff in the site banner, on product pages, in the cart and in order confirmation emails. Clear dates cut "where is my order" contacts; see how to reduce WISMO calls.
  4. Check business and pickup deliveries. FedEx uses the same last-ship dates for business and home addresses, but a business or pickup location must be open to receive the package, and many close early on Dec 24.
  5. Set a second cutoff for faster shipping. After your Ground cutoff, offer a paid 2-day or overnight option until the express cutoff, and say clearly what it costs.

Holiday wine shipping 2026: cutoffs, signatures and weather

Wineries have fewer options and less room for error than other online stores.

No USPS. Under federal law, intoxicating liquors are nonmailable, so the USPS dates above don't apply to wine. Wine ships through FedEx and UPS, and only for shippers with an approved alcohol shipping agreement. At UPS that means an Agreement for Approved Wine Shippers, a state license and shipments only to the states UPS allows.

Ground from the West Coast takes the longest. For a winery in California, Oregon or Washington, East Coast gifts are on 4- and 5-day Ground lanes. With FedEx, that means shipping by Dec 17–18. Many wineries set their store cutoffs well before that. One Oregon winery lists Dec 11 for Ground to the Midwest and East Coast and Dec 16 for the West Coast.

Every box needs an adult (21+) signature. That matters more in December, because many holiday wine orders are gifts sent to someone who doesn't know a package is coming. If no adult is home, the box doesn't arrive. FedEx makes up to 3 attempts. Since June 1, 2026, UPS sends wine to a UPS Access Point that accepts restricted goods after the first missed attempt and holds it for 7 days. One missed attempt on Dec 22 or 23 can easily push a gift past Christmas. For more on how this works, see adult signature delivery for wine and spirits.

Weather adds holds. Many wineries hold shipments during freezing or hot weather, and a weather hold in the last two weeks can cost a gift its date. Build those days into your cutoff for northern destinations.

Peak surcharges stack up. A December home delivery by FedEx or UPS Ground pays a $6.45–$6.50 residential surcharge plus a $0.75–$0.80 demand surcharge in the busiest weeks, before the adult-signature fee. See our 2026 peak season surcharge guide.

Hanukkah gifts (Dec 4–12) need their own cutoff, about three weeks before the Christmas dates.

Why the last shipping week is the riskiest

The final week packs the most orders into the least time, and there's no room left for a second try:
  • Late parcels. In December 2025, carriers delivered 97.2% (UPS), 95.3% (FedEx) and 94.1% (USPS) of parcels on time, according to ShipMatrix. Those are good numbers, but for an order placed on cutoff day, "a day late" means after Christmas.
  • Missed and failed deliveries. Many people travel in late December. A failed attempt on a signature-required or high-value package adds a day or more.
  • Stolen packages. A gift taken from a doorstep in the last week can't be replaced in time. See package theft prevention.
  • Gift recipients who aren't home. A gift shipped to a relative's house relies on someone you don't know being there to receive it.
Orders shipped to a staffed pickup location avoid most of these. The package arrives at a business that is open during the day, where the recipient can collect it with ID when convenient. Pickup doesn't make transit faster, though. A package to a pickup location travels on the same carrier network and needs the same ship-by dates.

What to offer after your shipping cutoff

Missing the cutoff doesn't have to mean losing the sale:
  1. Express upgrades until the overnight cutoff (Dec 23 at FedEx), clearly priced.
  2. "Arrives after Christmas" messaging with a printable gift card or gift note the buyer can hand over on the day.
  3. Digital gift cards and e-gift memberships (wine club memberships work well) right up to Dec 25.
  4. Local or winery pickup if you have a store or tasting room.
  5. New Year delivery promises. Some shoppers buy for New Year's Eve or January celebrations; remember there's no UPS Ground delivery on Dec 31.

Via.Delivery's solution

Via.Delivery helps online stores and wineries cut failed deliveries in the weeks when there's no time to reship:
  • Pickup at checkout: shoppers choose one of more than 36,000 FedEx Hold at Location and UPS Access Point sites as a shipping option. About 20,000 of those locations accept wine. The order ships there as a commercial delivery, so it skips the residential surcharge and the residential peak fee.
  • Pickup redirect: for orders already placed, including wine club shipments, Via.Delivery invites the customer by email and text to switch to a nearby pickup location before the order ships.
  • Missed delivery redirect: when a carrier can't complete a delivery, the customer can send the package to a nearby pickup location instead of waiting for another attempt or a return.
Packages are held for 7 days, and customers get reminders until they collect. Shoppers use the option when it's offered. On average, 7% of buyers of giftable merchandise, 12% of high-end accessories buyers and 16% of buyers of signature-required products such as wine choose a pickup location. More than 60% collect within 24 hours (Via.Delivery data).

Via.Delivery works with the systems you already use:Wineries can check which locations near any address accept wine with the free pickup location finder for wine. See how it works or book a demo before Cyber Week.

FAQ

What is the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?

With USPS, ship Ground Advantage by Dec 17, Priority Mail by Dec 18 and Priority Mail Express by Dec 19. With FedEx, Ground and Home Delivery run from Dec 17 (5-day transit) to Dec 23 (1-day transit), and overnight services until Dec 23, for arrival by Dec 24. UPS had not published its 2026 last days to ship as of Oct 8.

Has UPS published its 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?

Not by service yet. UPS has published its operating schedule: no pickup or delivery on Nov 26 or Dec 25, no Ground pickup on Dec 24 or Dec 31, and no Ground delivery on Dec 31. Air pickups on Dec 24 must be arranged by Dec 18.

How early should an online store set its holiday order cutoff?

Take the carrier's last day to ship for your slowest main lane, subtract your fulfillment time in business days, and subtract one buffer day. A store that ships the next business day on a FedEx 4-day Ground lane would set its last Ground order date at Wednesday, Dec 16.

Can wine be shipped with USPS for the holidays?

No. Intoxicating liquors, including wine, are nonmailable under federal law. Wineries ship through FedEx or UPS under an approved alcohol shipping agreement, and every package needs the signature of an adult aged 21 or older.

When should wineries ship holiday wine orders?

For FedEx Ground, a West Coast winery shipping to the East Coast (4–5 day lanes) needs to ship by Dec 17–18 for arrival by Dec 24. Many wineries set store cutoffs a week earlier to allow for weather holds and missed adult-signature attempts. Hanukkah gifts (Dec 4–12) need to ship about three weeks earlier.

Does shipping to a pickup location extend the holiday deadline?

No. Packages to FedEx Hold at Location or UPS Access Point sites travel on the same networks and need the same ship-by dates. Pickup lowers the risk of a failed or stolen delivery in the last week, and for wine it removes the need for someone to be home to sign.
